ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Streets Transportation Department for the City of Phoenix is hiring for a Signal Systems Specialist I. This position performs work which involves precise technical knowledge gained through training or experience to a variety of traffic engineering problems in the field or office. Responsibilities include technical duties such as signal timing and coordination; conducting traffic engineering studies; programming computerized traffic signals and controllers; maintaining the network for the central computer system for traffic signals; gathering traffic data and converting it to a usable format; troubleshooting and problem solving central control equipment, intersection signal controllers, auxiliary equipment including the interconnect system; implement new technology for the ATMS; and serving as a liaison between agencies involved in the construction and operation of traffic signals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years experience in paraprofessional engineering work;
  • One year of traffic engineering work,
  • Supplemented by college level courses in traffic engineering, basic computer programming and systems analysis, or a related field.
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings, and overtime is required.
  • Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of journey level experience in installation and maintenance of electronic and digital systems or related distribution systems;
  • Associate’s degree in electronics or related field.
  • Requires working irregular hours, second or third shift, weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Requires working in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
  • Working after-hours/weekend on-call rotation schedule may be required.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II and/or Level III certificate.
  • Experience with Traffic Signal Controllers (ASC2, ASC3, Cobalt, M60, 2070 and other Intelligent Traffic
    Controllers).
  • Experience with Siemens Next Phase software.
  • Experience with Transuite, Acyclica/ARID, NextEdit, AutoTurn, Visual 2017, TranSync, HCS, and VISSIM is
    desirable.
  • Experience performing traffic analysis and calculations, including field investigations.
  • Experience with programming, installing, and troubleshooting traffic signal controllers.
