ITS Arizona is an annual sponsor of the Best Future Transportation System award for the Engineers Week Future Cities Competition (https://futurecity.org/). This annual event encourages middle school students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by presenting a set of technical challenges over a four-month season culminating at a regional finals event that took place this past weekend. The technical challenge this year was Electrify Your Future – Design a 100% electrically powered city while keeping the environment healthy and safe.

This year’s winner of ITS Arizona’s award is Platinum City – their innovative city located on the eastern coast of the Danish islands of Zealand and Amager in Denmark – they did a tremendous job of incorporating futuristic transportation system ideas into their City while leveraging the multiple modes that their City residents wanted to use to move around. The three team members from Billy Lane Lauffer Middle School developed a wonderful essay, model, and presentation and were supported by their educator, Jackie Nichols, and their mentor, Sarah Howard.

ITS Arizona recognizes and congratulates the efforts of all of the teams that participated in the 2023-2024 Engineers Week Future Cities Competition! Thank you to Michelle Beckley, MariaAngelica Deeb, Marty Lauber, Michael Washkowiak, Deanna Haase, and Hunter Venne for participating on behalf of ITS Arizona this year!
