ITS Arizona Members,

ITS Arizona is once again participating in Arizona’s regional Future City Competition, sponsoring an award for Best Future Transportation System, and we need your support!  For those not familiar with the Future City Competition, here’s a great summary from their website:

Future City starts with a question—how can we make the world a better place? To answer it, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future that showcase their solution to a citywide sustainability issue. Past topics include stormwater management, urban agriculture, public spaces, and green energy. The 2021-2022 theme is A Waste-Free Future. Teams will design a waste-free city using the principles of a circular economy.

Participants complete five deliverables: a 1,500-word city essay; a scale model (or multiple model segments) built from recycled materials; a project plan, a presentation video, and a Q&A session with judges. Regional winners represent their region at the international Finals. After completing Future City, student participants are not only prepared to be citizens of today’s complex and technical world, but also poised to become the drivers of tomorrow.

As a part of our sponsorship, ITS Arizona is developing a team of volunteers to participate in reviewing competition essays as well as pre-recorded presentations to determine our award winner. This year, the competition will be entirely virtual and the essays as well as the presentations will be made available to volunteers for review on their own time within the review windows. The competition will follow the schedule below:

  • Monday, Jan 17, 2022: List of teams applying for awards available are to be provided. Competition Essays will be made available to sponsors for review on their own time.
  • January 21-28th, 2022: Teams will be pre-recording the presentations. Presentation schedule and Q/A participation opportunity to come.
  • Friday February 5th, 2022: We will identify top 3 teams and the winner for our award
  • Saturday, February 6th, 2022: Virtual Finals begin at 10:00 am. Chance to virtually present winning team
  • Saturday, February 26th, 2022: Tentative optional opportunity to hand award out in person to winning team with a photo opportunity. More details to come.

Looking for more upcoming opportunities to volunteer with ITS Arizona? We are planning a virtual outreach presentation with elementary schoolers for E-Week in February. We will talk with kids about engineering and what we do in our industry. Be on the lookout for more information for this E-Week volunteer opportunity.
